A few days ago I stumbled on a quote from Eckhart Tolle that made me think a lot about my life. He once said: “Realize deeply that the present moment is all you have. Make the NOW the primary focus of your life.” I used to believe that I’m one of those people who doesn’t care about the past nor the future and that I’m living only in the present. But after a lot of thinking, it’s safe to say that I’ve been mistaken. All this time my focus was the future and all the possible outcomes that could happen, making me completely lose sense of the present.
But what exactly does it mean to live in the present? Right now I would say enjoying in everything that life brings us. Complete acceptance of every moment and experience, complete surrender to your feelings – good or bad. With other words, awareness of everything that is happening at this moment in time within us and all around us. I believe that none of us has this level of awareness. And of course, if we don’t have it, life starts to go on without us. Maybe one day, after a week, month, year or even a decade we will finally realize what happened but it will be too late. We will wonder where the time has passed.
We are not supposed to be passive observers of our selves. We need to be fully involved in our life, in everything that we feel and do. In everything that is happening around us. That’s the only way to live in the present and with that, to accept the only reality which can be controlled. If you constantly live in fear from what awaits you behind the next corner, chances are that you will never make the next step on the road. You will never pass that corner and will forever stay stuck on one place. Who knows, maybe that corner is the only thing separating you from the thing you have been longing for your entire life.
Think about it. And never forget, be where you are and not where you think you should be.
